I thought I'd compile a little guide to Dallas. What to DO, and where to SHOP, EAT, DRINK, and STAY - organized by neighborhoods.
UPTOWN:
SHOP...
The Shak - The younger, hipper sister to Stanley Korshak - Dallas' quintessential luxury department store.
EAT...
Lucky's Cafe - 50s style diner with sinfully good breakfast and the best chicken fried steak in the city
Saint Ann - Housed in an old school building in the heart of chic uptown with a beautiful garden in the back
STAY...
Hotel Zaza - Stay in one of the 'Magnificent Seven' suites with themes like Rock Star and The Last Czar
Stanley Korshak
Saint Ann
KNOX/HENDERSON:
Grange Hall - More like a gallery of interesting and beautiful objects than a store, (but it iS a store) they also have incredible jewelry and accessories with a tendancy towards the macabre
We Are 1976 - Great little shop with a fascinating assortment of interesting gifts, books and art by locals
Forty Five Ten - Full of amazing designers like Philip Lim and Thakoon - mentioned often in Vogue and the NYT
Milk and Honey - Just like Anthropologie, but more affordable! What could be better?
Again & Again - They take recycling to a new level by refurbishing old furniture with beautiful and creative paint and upholstry
EAT...
Swig & The Gin Mill - Great hang-out restaurant with oh-so-good rustic food with a cool lounge in the back
The Porch - Everything's good here but they're famous for their mac-n-cheese
Toulouse - Fabulous French bistro right on the Katy Trail
The Old Monk - Nice and dark with the tantilizing smell of fish and chips wafting through the air...just right for an Irish pub
Barcadia - Super fun bar with old-fashioned arcade games and giant Jenga and Connect Four that gets the crowd a'mingling
DEEP ELLUM:
SHOP...
Lula B's East - One of my favorite stores on earth, mid-century modern furniture and decor with the entire upstairs dedicated to vintage clothing
EAT...
NORTH DALLAS:
SHOP...
Vintage Martini - Amazing selection of vintage and archive clothing, the owner is pretty muh an encyclopedia on fashion history...he also treats window dressing as the art it is, so major points for that
EAT...
The Magic Time Machine - Ok, the food's not great and the place looks like it's about 20 years past it's prime but going there was just about the most fun I've ever had at a restaurant. The entire staff is dressed as different film/book characters and they are IN CHARACTER no matter what. The salad bar is in a vintage car and each room has a different theme. Kitschy fun all around.
Gloria's - El Salvadorian food and great salsa dancing make this place a hit every time
Furs from Vintage Martini
